So this is where it all began about three years ago in November! My love of travel was always there and I did travel frequently but I was not able to spend as much time as I would like in a place. I had also never been to too many states other than those up and down the east coast. I am lucky that with my job, I had the option to travel. Basically how it works is a hospital is in need of a Respiratory Therapist and they have a position for usually about 13 weeks. If the hospital still has a need and they think you are a good fit, often you can stay longer. This is how I ended up in Hawaii. A 16 week assignment ended up turning into about a year. I don't think anyone could blame me! As much as I loved Hawaii, I had to continue my adventures to see all this country had to offer.
When I first stepped out of my apartment and walked a block and a half to the ocean I started squealing on the phone with my best friend. This place was unreal...there was no way I was really in Hawaii with this water and view. I was in heaven and this was only the beginning.
I could not fathom that my life for the next 16 weeks would be this! (I had no idea I would stay a whole year at the time!) My travel company ended up changing my apartment which was less than a mile away in a high rise, which turned out to be near the Hilton Hawaiian and lagoon. I was thrilled with the new location where I had an ocean view from my windows. There were a couple buildings that did not make the view unobstructed but I was lucky to see the sunset every night if I decided to from my room.
Venturing out of my apartment and crossing the street to the beach gave me a perfect view of Diamondhead (shown immediately below) off in the distance from Waikiki Beach. It was a little less congested down by the lagoon and Ala Wai Canal so I was perfectly content with my new "house".
I lucked out with this being my first travel assignment and being so far from home because a friend that I worked with from my home state was actually from Hawaii. She gave me her mother and sisters contact information. Her mom became such a huge help to me. She gave me bus maps, local words that I should learn, new foods to try and a tour guide! She was not the biggest fan of the sun and the beach but she learned quickly that I am obsessed with water and she decided to take me around the island. She showed me so many places that I would later go back and check out more later during my stay. Hanauma Bay (posted below) was one of the main places she brought me to that I could not wait to go back and snorkle at!
The first week or so was overwhelming, in a great way though. I left all my family and friends behind and not a state or two away...an ocean between us and depending on daylight savings time a 5-6 hour time difference. There was going to be some adjusting to do and I was back on nightshift! I can honestly say it was all worth it! This was the perfect beginning of my crush on traveling turning on to a full fledged passion. More exploring would soon follow....
